According to CNN News about the conflict between Israel and Gaza, a new ceasefire has taken effect. This ceasefire is between Israel and Hamas. This marks a pivotal moment in the two-year conflict in Gaza. As displaced Palestinians begin to return to northern parts of the territory, U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced confidence that the truce will hold, emphasizing his confidence in the Gaza ceasefire. Trump’s confident Gaza ceasefire will endure has been a significant message from the White House amidst ongoing discussions.
He insists that the parties are “tired of the fighting.” He also believes that momentum is on the side of peace. This development comes amid widespread humanitarian need. There is the promise of hostage releases. There is also a fragile hope for a turning point in the conflict.
Ceasefire Activation & Troop Pullback
The ceasefire went into effect midday, following the approval of a U.S.-brokered deal. Israeli forces began withdrawing from urban areas to agreed “deployment lines.” Trump is confident in this new Gaza ceasefire. He highlights the expected release of hostages by Hamas as part of the agreement.
Return of Displaced Palestinians
As security conditions eased under the ceasefire, large numbers of displaced Gazans began returning north to their former homes.
- Reports suggest that up to ~200,000 people have made the return journey.
- Many returnees face stark devastation: homes destroyed, infrastructure in ruins, and little remaining material aid in many areas.
Trump’s Confidence & Role
Speaking from the White House, Trump said he believed the ceasefire would hold because “they’re all tired of the fighting.” His confidence in achieving a Gaza ceasefire is unwavering.
- He acknowledged that while most of the agreement has consensus, some details will still need negotiating.
- Trump also highlighted international support and his plans to convene regional leaders in Egypt to consolidate the peace process.
Humanitarian Aid & Prisoner Exchanges
The agreement includes provisions. These provisions aim to dramatically increase humanitarian access and relief flows into Gaza. Severe food insecurity and shortages have been pervasive there.
- As part of the deal, Israel will release ~2,000 Palestinian prisoners. This action is in exchange for hostages held by Hamas.
- Hamas is expected to release the remaining living hostages within 72 hours of the ceasefire’s start.
Risks & Unsatisfied Issues
The ceasefire is only the first phase of a broader 20-point peace plan. It leaves critical challenges unresolved. These include long-term governance in Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, reconstruction, and ensuring compliance by both sides.
- Some Israeli leaders have warned that the truce could end if hostage releases do not proceed as planned.
- Skepticism remains about whether the ceasefire will endure, given past breakdowns and ongoing distrust between Israel and Hamas.
The ceasefire has ushered in a fragile moment of reprieve. It allows displaced Palestinians to return home. Humanitarian supplies are beginning to enter Gaza. Diplomatic momentum is building. Trump’s confidence in the ceasefire agreement adds political weight to the arrangement, but the path ahead is fraught with risk. The durability of this truce will depend heavily on timely hostage exchanges.
It also relies on adherence to the withdrawal lines and robust aid delivery. A credible political and security framework for Gaza’s future is essential. If these elements hold, the ceasefire may mark a turning point. However, if they do not, it risks collapsing amidst longstanding grievances and mutual suspicion.
