The Promise of Wireless Fiber
In the world of networking, there has always been a holy grail. This is achieving a connection that is as fast, reliable, and low-latency as a fiber optic cable. The goal is to do this without the cost and hassle of physically burying or stringing that cable. This is the domain of high-performance wireless bridging. MikroTik’s Wireless Wire Cube Pro kit aims to ultimately express this idea. This isn’t a router for your smartphone.
Instead, it’s a specialized point-to-point wireless kit. It is designed to create an incredibly high-speed link between two locations. Marketed as “Pure plug-and-play,” this pre-configured pair of devices is easy to use. It promises a “blazing fast encrypted wireless connection” by simply being pointed at each other. This review will put those claims to the test and see if it truly delivers a “wireless wire” experience.
MikroTik Wireless Wire Cube Pro Review
Design and Concept: Simplicity Meets Extreme Performance
The kit consists of two identical, compact white cubes—the Cube 60Pro ac. The design is simple, functional, and modern. Each cube has a single Gigabit Ethernet port and a power input. The key to their operation is the use of two radio technologies:
- 60 GHz (802.11ay) Radio: This is the superhighway. It provides the multi-gigabit, short-range, ultra-low-latency backbone link between the two cubes. The catch? 60GHz signals have very short range and are easily blocked by obstacles like walls, trees, or even heavy rain.
- 5 GHz (802.11ac) Radio: This acts as a fallback and management link. If the 60GHz connection is interrupted (e.g., by a bird flying through the beam). The connection seamlessly fails over to the 5GHz band to maintain link stability, albeit at slower speeds.
Setup and Usability:
MikroTik’s claim of “plug-and-play” is remarkably accurate for a product of this technical nature.
- Unbox, Power, Point: You connect one cube to your main network’s router via Ethernet. You connect the other cube to a device (or a switch) at the remote location. You then power them on and physically point the faces of the cubes toward each other.
- Automatic Connection: The cubes automatically seek each other out. They establish a secure, encrypted link using the 60GHz band. Then, they align themselves for the best possible signal using their internal antennas. A series of LED lights on the front provide clear feedback on the link quality and alignment.
- No Configuration Needed: This is the biggest selling point. Unlike traditional wireless bridges that require complex configuration on both ends, this kit comes pre-paired from the factory. There is no web interface to log into for basic operation; it just works.
Performance:
This is where the Cube Pro truly shines.
- Speed: In ideal conditions, the 60GHz link can easily saturate its Gigabit Ethernet port. This applies to clear line-of-sight and short distances under 200 meters. You can expect real-world throughput of 900+ Mbps, making it feel literally like a wire.
- Latency: The latency is incredibly low. It is comparable to a wired switch. This makes it perfectly suitable for latency-sensitive applications like online gaming, video conferencing, or accessing network storage.
- Reliability: The failover to 5GHz is a critical feature. It ensures the connection never fully drops. This makes it robust enough for a permanent installation.
Target Audience and Ideal Use Cases:
This product is a specialist tool, not a consumer gadget. It is perfect for:
- Connecting two buildings (e.g., a house and a garage/studio) with clear line-of-sight.
- Providing a high-speed link to a separate office or guest house on a property.
- Content creators or professionals who need to quickly set up a multi-gigabit link between two rooms without running cables.
- As a temporary “wireless fiber” connection for events or construction sites.
Pros:
- Genuine Plug-and-Play: Unmatched ease of setup for a enterprise-grade wireless link.
- Blazing Fast Performance: Effectively provides a full Gigabit wireless connection.
- Excellent Reliability: Seamless failover to 5GHz ensures the link stays alive.
- Built-in Encryption: The connection is secure by default.
Cons:
- Absolute Line-of-Sight Required: Any obstruction will block the 60GHz signal.
- Short Range: Optimized for distances under 200m; performance degrades quickly beyond that.
- No User Configuration: This approach is a pro for simplicity. However, it’s a con for advanced users who might want to tweak settings. Limited advanced access is possible.
- Weather Dependent: Heavy rain or snow can attenuate the 60GHz signal.
Conclusion: Marvel of Engineering
The MikroTik Wireless Wire Cube Pro is not for everyone. However, for those who need what it offers, it is nothing short of magical. It successfully demystifies point-to-point wireless bridging, packaging cutting-edge 60GHz technology into an incredibly simple and user-friendly product.
It lives up to its “Wireless Wire” name. It delivers performance that is indistinguishable from a physical Gigabit Ethernet cable for all practical purposes. If you have a clear line of sight between two points, this kit offers a fast and reliable connection. You can avoid the hassle of digging trenches or configuring complex hardware. It is arguably one of the best and simplest solutions on the market. It is a brilliantly executed product that fulfills a very specific need perfectly.
